Photography with a twist by Lyle Skippy Skipage
At what age did you discover you had a passion for photography?
I had always been interested in photography, but really discovered it at the age of 16 when I was bored one day and picked up a camera and took a walk with it.
What form of photography is your favourite to shoot?
I enjoy shooting all different things because they each pose a different challenge, but my favorite forms are sports and landscapes simply because you can’t change what’s happening and have to capture the shot there and then.
What’s your personal best tip for young and upcoming photographers?
Nowadays it’s fairly hard for your work to stand out with all the great photographers out there. So I would say get creative, try something new with photography every day and work on funky different projects. Always push your work out there using all the different tools such as social media.
What camera do you shoot with?
I use a Canon 7D. It never lets me down as I can get any shot even in the most difficult conditions, and it is easy to use. I also have a Go Pro for fun action and water shots, as well as a Konica Minolta B110 film camera.
What Lenses and other accessories do you use?
I use a Canon EFS 18- 135mm 3.5 as my everyday lens. A Sigma DG 70- 300mm 5.6 as my zoom lens, and my personal favorite a Canon EF 50mm 1.8 as my “arty” lens. I also have a battery pack, a bunch of memory cards and a very sturdy tripod as well as different filters.
Do you shoot in Jpeg or RAW?
Luckily my camera allows me to use both, but I always edit the RAW images.
What artistic approach do you use in your work that makes you stand out as a photographer?
I like the photograph to be natural rather than manipulate the conditions to get it, therefore I look for the fun side even in the most basic and boring things, although I let my editing skills do all the work once I’ve captured the image to give the photo that unique edge.
What is the most common setting you use for your everyday shoot?
I usually have my camera set to aperture mode so that I can easily select how much Depth of Field and light I want. Although if I’m on the go I have a high shutter speed set to capture the shot quickly
In your own words, describe what photography means to you?
I found it a way to escape boredom and terrible weather when I was living in England, but now I travel a lot and it allows me to look at the world in a different way and to even see a photograph in the most mundane situations. It lets me be as creative as I want and makes me go searching for that “breathtaking” shot. So photography means a lot to me as it has made me see things differently
