Jason from JJP Photography KZN was there to catch the action, more about Jason and his passion for photography…
Tell as a bit about yourself Jason?
My name is Jason Pretorius and my passion is photography. I have been doing photography for several years as I enjoy capturing those special moments that make us who we are today. I am outgoing, love meeting new people, and give 100% in everything I do. I believe in living every day as if it were my last.
Where in Durban can we find you?
I am based in Glenwood, but travel all over Durban, and sometimes further, to do photography for numerous events. You can contact me on 082 493 6467
Why do you have a passion for photography?
The reason why I have a passion for photography is because I believe that a memory can live on through what we see in a photo. What I see through the lens, and capture, can be an eternal gift for someone else. I feel a certain type of reward when people thank me for a photo that they love as in turn it rewards them. Let it be a virtuous memory that they want to cherish, a funny moment to look back on and reminisce about, or even a sad memory that they have moved on from, all in all, my photos represent growth from that certain moment from when it was captured.
What’s your favourite form of photography, example: photographing landscapes, objects, people etc. and why this particular form?
I do not have a favourite type of photography that I prefer over another, as I see beauty in several different forms in any given space! From nature, to people, events and nightclubs, what I do at that moment, is my favourite.
What camera and accessories do you currently use?
Canon 60D and various accessories depending on what I am shooting.

What makes your photography different to other photographers’ work?
Most photographers that I have come across have a certain passion for a particular type of photography, and focus mainly on that. With myself, I do not have a particular field that I focus on more than another, even though right now the demand for me is in the nightclub industry, I do not solely focus on that, I make time to do all sorts of photography and show my handiness in all types of fields.
Do you have any advice to anyone wanting to become an amateur photographer?
My advice to someone wanting to be a photographer would be to work hard and take time in building yourself up to be the best that you can be. It takes time and patience to grow and be recognized out there. Passion gets you places and that’s a given. We all differ in several ways and you cannot go from zero to hero overnight. Learn and research different techniques and never be ashamed to ask for help! Some of the best advice I have received about photography are from other photographers I looked up to. Dedication to this field is what creates opportunity.
