Doctors Without Borders team tours Kwa-Zulu Natal raising awareness on humanitarian action, search and rescue work in the Mediterranean Sea.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) face-to-face fundraisers are back in Richards Bay, KwaZulu Natal for a week-long tour where they will explain the organization’s medical relief work worldwide offered to people forced to flee. Since May this year, three boats have rescued more than 16, 350 people. In response to needs of people fleeing conflicts in Syria and Afghanistan – MSF teams have also assisted a further 1, 166 others with safe passage to Italy (after they were rescued by other boats) making it a total of 17, 516 people assisted by MSF’s teams on the Mediterranean. There are currently over 59 million displaced people around the world. They are individuals and families who have been forced to flee homes into uncertain futures due to war, oppression and unliveable conditions. On their journeys, in particular on the Mediterranean Sea, they risk their lives to reach safety. ‘’Our medical teams work hard to help them survive by providing medical care,” says Kelly Barlow, the MSF Southern African Travel Teams Coordinator.
The MSF fundraising tour will run from 20 October to 28 November, and is aimed at raising awareness of themedical work MSF provides during crises throughout the world, while explaining to KZN residents how MSF’s work relies on the support of individual donors to keep providing independentmedical care.

About MSF:Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in an international, medical humanitarian organisation that provides medical care to those affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and manmade disasters, and speaking out on behalf of the most vulnerable.
MSF gives assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or politics. This year KwaZulu Natal witnessed violence and displacement of over 7,000 people during the xenophobic violence. Ordinary people took a stand against this and to support MSF teams’ work in displacement camps.
“We are counting on local people to be part of our lifesaving medical humanitarian worldwide work by visiting our fundraising team at the different shopping malls where they can learn more and sign up as donors enabling MSF giving care to people in crisis.’’ says Kelly Barlow, the MSF Southern African Travel Teams Co-ordinator. About MSF fundraising: MSF is registered in South Africa as a Non-profit Company (NPC) and as a Public Benefit Organization (PBO) and firmly adheres to the good governance principles of fairness, accountability, responsibility, responsibility and transparency.
