The Busiest Port in Africa – Port of Durban
In 1497 the Port of Durban was named Port Natal, when Vasco Da Gama in search of a sea route to India came across what we now know as Durban. From then on, you will find that the port is mentioned periodically throughout time and played an interesting role during the world wars. During the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902, the sand bar had to be conquered and later the Umbilo and Umhlatazana Rivers were canalized to control their water flow into the harbour. The Durban Container Terminal was developed in 1977.
There are three yachting marinas; one opposite the Esplanade where you will find the Point Yacht Club, one at Wilson’s Wharf and another near Bayhead where you’ll find the Bluff Yacht Club.
The Port of Durban operates 24/7. According to Transnet, the “port has 57 berths and over 4000 commercial vessels call at the port each year”.
