The Expedition Project

In search of a nation's stories, dreams and heartbeat.

The EXPEDITION Project will embark on a 365-day journey to 200 South African towns.
In 2012, The EXPEDITION Project will embark on a 365-day journey to 200 South African towns in search of a nation’s stories, dreams and heartbeat.
Our primary aim is to take stock of its social and environmental challenges and inspire sustainable change.
Our aim is to travel across South Africa for the purpose of connecting with communities to identify:
- their greatest challenges and threats;
- their greatest successes;
- their unique opportunities and potential.
“Starting today, creating tomorrow and securing the future.”

In search of a nation's stories, dreams and heartbeat.

Will you join us on our Expedition towards making our dream the reality?
“Picture for a moment, a world in which freedom, peace, solid environmental policy and co-existence are a given.
Now picture our world as it is at this moment in time…
Sometimes connecting a dream to reality takes nothing more than veering off onto a dirt road for a while. But what instigates that slight change, that sudden turn? Is it fantasy? Is it necessity? Is it force? Or is it encouragement?
Humanity is poised at a critical fork in the road and we have two choices: Maintain our current direction or take a slightly different path and find a future in which we are all we can be, living our potential in positive environments surrounded by the vastness of possibility.
Will you join us on our Expedition towards making our dream the reality?”
Roger Wynne-Dyke
The Expedition Project’s aims are ambitious. Its scope is vast. But its vision is grounded in years of hands-on experience and professional attention to detail.
Our first-hand experience of working with underprivileged communities has done away with any illusions we may have started out with. And yet, we have emerged more hopeful for the future. Where obstacles stand in the way of meaningful change, we see opportunities for creativity and growth. Where resources are scant, we see potential to use what is right here at hand.
Our mission, and the mission of this entire project, is to empower and inspire people to create a better future by using the only time we have: now.

Life Philosophy: The first word I utter to myself most mornings is “Erleichda” from Tom Robbins’ Jitterbug Perfume. I am OK having a silly haircut if it puts a smile on someone’s face and makes a small child laugh and point. Music, colour and poetry should be the first items on any agenda.
Project Goals: My role is to record the project as it unfolds and gives the story a visual platform. I cannot have any goals for the project, as I am there to observe, but never steer.
The Expedition Project team is a group of inspirational people.

In search of a nation's stories, dreams and heartbeat.
The dream:
The EXPEDITION Project’s dream is to create a new way of living and thinking that will enable humanity to create a worthy future for our grandchildren.
Its vision is to initiate a renaissance that every member of the human race plays an active part in – every individual’s involvement will be significant, however small the contribution might be.
The reason:
Humanity faces its greatest ever social and environmental challenges. We are picking the bitter fruits of irresponsible industrialisation and the unrestricted exploitation of our fellow men and our planet. We have a choice to make: we can be passive bystanders and allow this trend to wreak further havoc on our world, or we can be the change-makers that will turn the tide.
The EXPEDITION Project is a venture that seeks to empower people to be agents of meaningful change by showing them that their roles are significant. It will also identify the areas that are most in need of that meaningful change. This mission will take the form of an overland voyage that will be publicised to maximise the awareness it creates.
The EXPEDITION Project aims to blaze a new trail – not only in its outcome, but also in its approach. It is not merely an indulgent adventure or a superficial “feel good” campaign. It seeks to initiate and support critical community projects that are geared towards redirecting the future of our country, our continent and our planet.
The culture:
The EXPEDITION Project is a lifestyle that co-exists in harmony with its surroundings. Its motto is: “Starting today, creating tomorrow and securing the future.” Its collective passion is unquestionable. Its story is far reaching. It embraces diversity and recognises the value of every person’s unique contribution to the whole.
The ideals:
- We stand for solutions that are active, practical and relevant.
- We stand for adaptability and transparency.
- We stand for sustainable development.
- We believe that education can improve the present and the future.
- We believe that the youth plays a critical part in creating their future.
- We believe that every person’s contribution matters.
The EXPEDITION Project’s dream is to create a new way of living and thinking...
If you had to write ten points that define you as a person and a member of your community, what would they be?
These are ours:
- Diversify and expand to reach the goal of spreading our message
- Put actions to the solutions
- Work with the youth in developing their future
- Educate the population to improve their present
- Focus on the pertinent and necessary
- Help provide economically and financially beneficial ways to live
- Share the story with the world
- Re-invent our goals and targets as needed
- Be transparent in our long term visions
- Implement practical, relevant solutions to real problems
