Welcome to African Legend

African Legend, a registered non-profit organisation, is run by passionate individuals who are determined to improve South Africa’s socio-economic situation by offering educational and skills development programs for children from previously disadvantage areas. We fulfill our programm through:

Extensive extra classes:

Learners in grade 8 to grade 12 from different schools and areas join us for two extra classes per week to be assisted with their homework and to practice for exam papers. Extra classes are typically held Saturday morning and during the week after school, depending on the availability of teachers and facilities.

Maths & Physics Experiments:

We provide practical, hands-on Physics and Maths’ Experiments to stimulate the interest in sciences and demonstrate applied theory. All experiments are developed in line with learners’ needs and respective grade levels.

Educational Excursions:

We organise visits to science centres, museums and businesses in different industries to allow pupils to see the application of school subjects in real life.

Sport Program:

We see sport as a fertile ground to stimulate social interaction between youth, to build teamwork skills and self-confidence, and to provide an environment where positive values can flourish.

Youth Festival:

Together with NGOs in Muizenberg and Du Noon, we organise youth festivals where young people perform and present learned poetry, music, and dance skills.

All our activities are realised in partnership with schools, NGOs and communities!

Educational Excursions

Educational Excursions is the third part in African Legend’s extra class program which is offered to improve the educational spectrum available to deprived students in Cape Town. The visiting of science centres, museums and businesses in different industries by learners, is an essential part to the concept of theory and practical application that allows pupils to see the concrete results of school education in real life.

Educational Excursion together with Experiments does not only stimulate the basic understanding of sciences but also provides room for pupils to visualize their possible future and opportunities. With such tangible educational programs, the learning process of students will be enhanced as they become intrinsically motivated to further their learning, understanding and experience.

Experiments

In 2011, Dr Wim Fuls, voluntarily introduced in his dealing with severely disadvantaged learners, experiments as a tool to stimulate learners’ interest in Physical Sciences. As result he could reduce the failure rate of regularly attending students.

As part of our extra class program, we offer practical, hands-on Physics and Maths’ Experiments at the Central Library in Cape Town. All experiments are developed in line with learners’ needs and respective grade levels. However, we are also open to suggestions, so feel free to send us an email or chat to us on our Facebook page.

Extra Classes

The focus is to decrease the failure rate of learners in schools through extensive exercises in extra classes. We strive to level the learning standards that enable learners to face social challenges as well as academic studies.

For the last two years, African Legend has been offering extra classes in Maths, Physics, Accounting, Business Studies and Biology at Vista High School in Bo-Kaap and Du Noon. Based on our experience and through partnership, we mainly focus on subjects identified by the particular school as major learners’ problems.

The activities of African Legend begin officially in February with the beginning of the school term and end with the matric examination time in November of every year.

Therefore, the operation cycle is designed according to the schools calendar. After the school term has started a two month period is prepared to allow African legend and schools or other organization members to identify learners’ difficulties.

Sports Program

We see sport as a fertile ground to engage with youth, to stimulate social interaction and to provide space to grow positive values. In March 2010, we began our training project in Delft pupils under the age of 14 years. The communities in these areas, especially parents, are excited and grateful to see such initiative, which takes their children off the streets.
The sport program is being held three days a week on a Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. In addition, soccer teams meet twice a month for friendly matches in different Cape Town suburbs.

All soccer training equipment and T-shirts were donated by Claremont Lottery Club and Nicholson Textiles.

Besides the soccer teams, we also intend to set up cricket teams. However, we have been unsuccessful thus far in finding an available coach who could train and guide the teams.

Youth Festival

In February 2009, African Legend became a member of the Muizenberg Cape Town Youth Festival committee under ARTAPART production. Learners from various schools and communities are invited on a year on year basis to attend the festival.
