Safe training for your next marathon
Safety should be part of any training plan for big events like the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the Two Oceans Marathon or any of the Parkrun events happening across the country.
“Our roads are very busy this time of year with cyclists and runners making use of the favourable weather conditions to get into shape. My wish is that every single person is able to enjoy their workout in safety,” says Verena Hulme, district manager (Cape Town North) for ADT Security.
A very good place to start with one’s safety routine, she says, is by making sure another person is aware of the route you will be taking and your expected time of return. In this way, they can quickly raise the alarm in case something goes wrong.
“Visibility is another very important aspect. Wearing reflective clothing ensures you are visible to other road users,” says Hulme.
There is safety in numbers. Hulme recommends strongly against running or cycling alone but rather to join a group of people who can look out for your safety and also offer encouragement along the way when the muscles get too sore.
Hulme says there are other tips that she also can recommend:
– Make sure your cellphone is properly charged so that you are able to call for help in case of an emergency;
– Don’t use the same training route every day. Varying the route makes it difficult for any would-be criminal to anticipate your movements, while the change in scenery can also make the physical exertion more bearable for you;
– Leave the headphones at home. It is better to remain aware of your surroundings at all time so that you can hear any oncoming vehicles or other potential risks to your safety;
– Take along enough money to be able to catch a bus or a taxi or even make a phone call from a payphone, if need be;
– If you have an alarm system at home, remember to activate it before leaving for your training ride. Lock all the doors and gates, so that your loved ones can be safe while they wait for your return.
“Cycling groups such as the Pedal Power Association have put together very important safe cycling tips. Take a look at their website www.pedalpower.org.za for advice,” says Hulme.
