Another victory for crime fighting
Three suspects were arrested this week in Welgemoed on suspicion of being part of a crow-bar gang operating in the Oak Glen area, in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. “The men were arrested in great part thanks to the use of license plate recognition (LPR) cameras that have been strategically installed across the north of the city,” says Verena Hulme, Cape Town North district manager for ADT Security.
She explains that one of their monitoring centre staff received a call from the SAPS about a vehicle that had been linked to suspected crow-bar gang activity in Oak Glen. The vehicle’s details were uploaded to the LPR network.
“Earlier today (Thursday) an LPR alert was generated when the vehicle was noticed entering the Welgemoed area. Our monitoring centre alerted the SAPS as well as deployed an ADT armed response vehicle to investigate and monitor the movement of the vehicle,” says Hulme.
The vehicle was eventually stopped in Vleiroos Street and its three occupants were taken into custody. A crow-bar was found in the vehicle.
“Well done to everyone who worked together to secure the arrest of these suspects. I urge anyone to immediately alert their local security company or the SAPS about any suspicious activity in their community, so that this information can be shared across the area and also made available to high-tech crime fighting systems such as the LPR camera network. Working together we can drive crime out of our community,” says Hulme.
