What’s the real deal with aphrodisiacs?
Many foods are considered to be an aphrodisiac.
There are many people who believe that feeding their partners (or themselves) specific foods will result in the onset of insatiable sexual desire.
For centuries, a variety of foods have been considered mood enhancers or directly linked to arousal.
But is it all true? Can specific foods truly inspire desire?
Much research has been conducted to prove or dispel whether aphrodisiacs are real. Of course, most of us want it to be real and therefore for us, it is. Feeding our partners oysters and champagne seems like an obvious way to “get lucky”. But is it science or is it simply in our heads – a placebo effect? The answer is both straightforward and complicated at the same time.
Scientifically speaking it’s a firm “no”
CNBC has tried to find the answer. Sexologist Megan Stubbs gave some insight into what makes a food an aphrodisiac. She said, “To be a true aphrodisiac, the substance has to elicit sexual desire”. But no one can prove that there is any food consumed by humans that can do this.
However, there is much evidence to suggest that so-called aphrodisiacs have worked throughout history. After all, in the 16th century, the Japanese Yujo girls were convinced that a tincture of lotus root, eels, and charred newt was the ultimate aphrodisiac. This concoction was ultimately a part of their professional arsenal and they wouldn’t have been successful without it. But this is anecdotal evidence and the reports are all subjective. Science has been unable to prove anything of this nature.
The power of suggestion trumps the power of science
The power of suggestion is likely the strongest motivator behind aphrodisiacs and their effectiveness. Popular foods such as oysters, strawberries, and spicy foods are considered sexual stimulants. Though for many other reasons and not because they actually create the desire within someone.
Oysters supposedly look similar to female genitalia and therefore are sexy to eat. But it could also be that they have reputation for being a food of royalty and those steeped in luxurious lifestyles and, of course, they’re paired with champagne. Strawberries supposedly look like little red hearts and are a firm favourite with couples on Valentine’s Day. But again, they’re suggestive and also often paired with chocolate and champagne. So this is a decadent feast which is likely to inspire sensuality and frisson between couples.
Spicy foods are said to get your engine going but isn’t it obvious why? They’re burny, these foods make your lips swell a little, your cheeks blush, and your tongue tingle and so you’re in the throes of an incredible sensory experience. Also, if you eat enough you’ll experience a rush of endorphins. So it makes sense that spicy could possibly get you in the mood. In essence, these foods are suggestive and yes, arousing, but not necessarily sexual.
Also, it’s important to note that most times these aphrodisiacs are paired with alcohol. And if anything, alcohol is a powerful aphrodisiac. It’ll relax you completely, free you of your inhibitions and lower your stress levels. If you’re connecting with an intimate partner and drinking your favourite cocktail then yes, you’re very likely going to get it on afterwards.
So, should you play around with aphrodisiacs?
Well sure, if you don’t take yourself too seriously. Food is a sensual and pleasurable part of human existence. Enjoying a tantalising meal with your loved one or on a first date could give you the feels because you’ll be satiated, stimulated and possibly a little inebriated. And often, arousing your partner with food has a lot to do with the promise of what’s to come when you’re done dipping strawberries into melted chocolate and feeding them to each other.
If you want to enjoy sensual foods together then find things to eat that exotic, rich, creamy, smooth and spicy. If you want to relive your teenage fantasies then head to an online sex toy shop and find yourself some edible body paint or candy undies.
At the end of the day, you know what to do to arouse your partner and ensure you have a fun filled sensual time together. And you certainly don’t need to eat some eel to seal the deal.
