Tips to keep your skin healthy this summer
It’s summertime and the living is easy. When the beach beckons and the pool pulls you in, stay smart and protected with all the right practices for a safe time in the sun.
It’s easy to neglect your skin in the summer. The warmer, more humid weather means your skin isn’t as dry and itchy as in the winter.
The sun-kissed look of a tan can make you feel better when you look in the mirror. But the lazy days of summer don’t mean you should be lazy with your skincare regime. In fact, it means you should be even more diligent.
Here are six tips to keep your skin healthy this summer.
Face your day
Those short walks to lunch or running errands can put you at risk of too much sun exposure. Adding a healthy layer of face protecting sunscreen to your morning beauty routine is a critical don’t-skip-it step. Look for lotions enhanced with antioxidants for an extra skin-health boost.
Exfoliate at least once a week
Dead cells sit on the surface of your skin making it look dull, rough and dry. By exfoliating, you’re removing these dead cells, allowing your more radiant and healthier summer skin to shine through. It also allows skin cells to regenerate more quickly, which keeps aging at bay. Whenever possible, choose a gentle, more natural exfoliator.
Avoid tanning beds
The tanning beds are linked to cancer and are not safer than the actual sun. Think carefully about the risks you expose yourself to when you go to a tanning salon. If you really want some summer skin colour, avoid this and choose a safer option, such as self-tanning towels and lotions. There is body cream for dark skinned women as well as for the lighter skinned. Look at that before you purchase your cream. Be sure to check the ingredients label to ensure the base formulation is safe.
Moisturise your skin
In the summer it’s tempting to ease up on moisturising because your skin may not feel as dry. But good moisturisers work over time, promoting healthy skin with consistent use. We don’t stop eating well or exercising in the summer, so we shouldn’t stop taking care of our skin. If you do happen to get sunburned, act fast to mitigate the negative effects.
Drink a lot of water
Drinking water benefits how well your body functions and ultimately affects how your skin looks and feels. For example, proper hydration helps flush toxins from your body. When toxins build up, it can cause organs such as your kidneys to work less efficiently, which has a direct impact on your skin. Sip water throughout the day.
Sweat is out
In addition to the obvious physical benefits, your fitness routine is a ritual. Sweat, your body’s natural response to exercise, is a brilliant elixir that regulates your body temperature and releases trace amount of toxins. Sweating also increases your circulation, improving your skin’s appearance with a healthy glow. So for extra beauty-oomph, do sweat the small stuff.
Smooth operator
Daily facials not in the cards? A gentle, daily exfoliating routine is your next best bet in the quest of softer, smoother, cleaner skin. Exfoliating scrubs or soft face brushes used with gel and cream cleansers lift and wash away dead skin cells. It also cleans out your pores for that awesome facial affect.
