Summer is for sailing
Summer is the time to go yachting and sailing. And fortunately there are plenty of events taking place this summer.
The biggest yachting event of the year – the Volvo Ocean Race – has just finished in Cape Town but there are still a number of other events to keep you busy during this time of the year.
Here are some of the events taking place on the water around the Cape over the next few weeks.
Some of the events are open to the public, others are for club members and some only for people who have completed one of the yacht training courses available, so check before planning to participate.
The Royal Cape Summer Regatta takes place on December 13 to 16. According to the Royal Cape Yacht Club, the regatta is a “a fun end of year wind-down, with excellent sailing, but also great events off the water”.
The West Coast Cruise takes place between December 27 and 31 from Dassen Island to Port Alfred to see the New Year in.
Another Royal Cape Yacht Club event is the Mid Summer Fling Regatta which takes place from February 6 to 8.
Soon afterwards is the Mykonos Offshore on February 20 to 21.
The False Bay Yacht Club is hosting the Governor’s Cup on December 27. According to them, “the excitement is starting to build”.
“The Governor’s Cup Yacht Race is an exciting 1 700 mile summer ocean race from Simon’s Town to Jameson in St Helena Island. Entrants typically range from fast racing boats with experienced crews to cruising boats manned by small families, some of which may afterwards sail on from the island to other destinations.”
Be sure to check for details on your nearest club’s website and get sailing this festive season.
