Milnerton Flea Market under the cover with Ed Beukes
Having started in Milnerton somewhat 20 years ago, the Milnerton Flea Market is situated on Marine Drive (R27) opposite the Metro Industrial Park in Paarden Eiland…
I had always heard about this market selling 2nd hand, vintage and antique goods and thought it would be a great way to kick off my Saturday morning, so I took my fiancé, filled my pocket with some cash and drove out to see what bargains I could find…
Milnerton Flea Market consists of about 250 stalls along Marine Drive merchandizing on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays…
Opening her gates at 08:00, the market soon fills up with people from all corners and spheres of the city sharing only in one common drive, the will to find a bargain fused with a keen heart to hunt for treasure. Chris and I arrived around 10:00 and bubbling with energy, I flipped out my camera to share our experiences of Milnerton Flea Market with ShowMe Cape Town.
After easily finding parking at the southern side of the flea market, we made our way to where the action was taking place.
As we passed happy shoppers returning to their cars carrying old portraits, lampshades, garage tools and other interesting bric-a-brac we noticed that the entrance to the Flea Market and its extensive parking facilities were free of charge! Bonus!
Soon I was giggling at the mixture between goods and garbage displayed on the ground, on tables made out of doors, inside cars, on top of car bonnets and inside car boots. Most of the stand holders are open for negotiation but with most of the items at already such a giveaway price, negotiating was not even necessary.
Anyone with a love for old and unique antiques or collectables would love this market. The walk-ways are broad and suitable for groups of friends walking side by side, mothers pushing twin-prams or even wheelchairs passing one another.
Before we knew it, 10:00 had become 14:00 and our hands were full of old suitcases stuffed with vintage teacups and glass bottles that looked like they had been washed ashore centuries ago. We bought bags of dried fruit and nuts and even toy cars that took me back to the innocent playtime of my childhood years.
It was like one big nostalgic journey and I grinned as we walked to the car knowing that at any given weekend (weather permitting) I can run back to this hub of sentiment and connect myself once again with the invisible past by just strolling through the stalls at the Milnerton Flea Market.
