Outdoor family spots in Cape Town
Summer is around the corner which means that there’s no excuse for staying indoors with the family.
In Cape Town we are spoilt with amazing locations to visit over the weekends or holidays. Here are five outdoor locations in and around Cape Town that are the perfect family day spots.
1. Kraal Bay
Kraal Bay is nestled in the West Coast National Park. It’s just an hour and a bit out of Cape Town and during spring season you will have the colourful wild flowers on full display. During summer you can also swim in the lagoon at Kraal Bay so pack in your costume and towel. This location is a perfect day trip for the whole family, and there are allocated braai spots, so it really is the perfect summer spot.
2. Kogel Bay
Kogel Bay Resort is 10 km after Gordons Bay on Clarence Drive.The resort is situated between mountains filled with indigenous fynbos and a 4km long sandy beach, all of which forms part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. There are day picnic spots and overnight camp sites available. If you’re staying for just the day then pack a delicious picnic basket filled with freshly baked breads, cured meats and cheeses.
3. Kirstenbosch
The Kirstenbosch National Garden is renowned for its flora and fauna. The gardens open at 8am and close again at 7pm during summer. Treat the family to a day out in the gardens, it really is an enjoyable location for everyone. You can take your own food into Kirstenbosch Gardens or you can pre-order from Moyo Restaurant.
4. Silvermine Nature Reserve
The Silvermine Nature Reserve, which is part of the Table Mountain National Park, is a perfect outdoor spot for all ages. It’s about a 30 minute drive from the centre of Cape Town. If you enjoy hiking or mountain-biking with the family then this spot is for you. You can hike to Elephant’s Eye cave or if you are very adventurous, try hike all the way to the upper cable-car station on Table Mountain.
5. Maiden’s Cove
Maiden’s Cove is a beautiful scenic lookout nestled between Clifton’s beaches and Glen Beach. Pack your picnic or braai items as Maiden’s Cove has braai areas. The views from Maiden’s Cove are absolutely exquisite as you’re surrounded by Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles. A quick stroll down to the beach at low tide and you’ll find yourself completely in awe of the marine life you’ll discover in the tidal pools.
