Keep your wooden furniture looking new
Grand wooden floors, posh wooden chairs and fine finished tables can look spectacular at first, but as time progresses the glossy wood finish can become dull. As a preventive measure to avoid the wood decaying or losing its shine, there are many things you can do to keep your wooden furniture looking like new.
Cleaning
When wooden garden furniture becomes dirty the simplest method to clean it is by using warm water and dish soap, but be careful not to soak the wood in the water. Make use of a toothbrush to get in between the crevices and other hard to reach places as this will help to remove the remainder of excess dirt. Wipe the dirt off from the surface area with a few paper towels until all the grime and dirt has been removed. The last step will be to dry off any residual moisture with a soft cloth.
Give your wood a protective coat
Once the wood has been given a good cleaning it will need a protective layer to protect its finish. A good quality soft paste wax will do the trick – all you need to do is follow the instructions on the label. After five minutes has passed, lightly buff the wood with a soft shoe brush or cloth. Then after 30 to 60 minutes, give the wood another buff, this time with a bit more vigor. By doing this the wood will have a beautiful shine that will last for a few months.
Keep wood away from direct heat or sunlight
Be sure to put your wooden garden furniture out of the sunlight’s exposure. Even the hot summer temperature that penetrates through a window can be hot enough to damage the woodwork. Over time the wood will dry out causing it to shrink and crack. Not only will it be damaged, but the finish will also begin to fade. Avoid placing wooden furniture near heating units or vents as this will cause the wood to shrink and dry, causing it to crack.
A quick touch up
A touch up is a temporary solution for chips and scratches, but will perfectly hide unappealing, worn down furniture. Use an appropriate shoe polish colour on the feet of your furniture to make scratches less visible. For best results, use a colour-matching felt-tip marker to hide those ugly scratches even more effectively.
