Keep your bedroom trendy and toasty in winter
There’s nothing quite as wonderful as sleeping late on stormy weekend mornings.
There’s something romantic about it all.
In fact, the winter season can be idyllic if you let it.
Winter nights indoors in a cosy setting playing games with family and friends, watching your favourite movies, eating wholesome foods and drinking hot chocolate are the best.
This is one way of really spending quality time together with your loved ones.
Creating a home that is cosy and comfortable is important. Your home should feel like a restful place where you can really kickback. With the colder months quickly approaching, you want to do the necessary to break the chill. Of all the rooms in your home, it’s the bedrooms that you want to be the most comfortable no matter the weather.
Contrary to popular belief, in winter, you shouldn’t heat your room up too much. It’s the cooler air that helps you sleep so if you want a good night’s rest you should switch off the heater or kill the fireplace early on in the evening. By not doing so you could end up with a dry nose, sore throat and even a headache in the morning. But most people need a little warm up to settle in for the night and a couple of things to make sure they feel snug and toasty.
So here’s how to create a trendy and cosy bedroom which will encourage good rest and keep you warm in the winter months.
The floor
There aren’t many modern homes that are built with carpeted floors anymore. And we lose a lot of heat through the floors. Investing in heated flooring is ideal, because when the weather turns warm you can switch the heating off. However, this can be a costly expense and investing in a high-quality rug will do a good job of warming up the floor. Choose a rug that will cover most of the floor and when the summer months hit, you can always roll up the rug and pack it away.
The windows
You lose a lot of heat through your windows. If they aren’t sealed properly you could end up with an icy wind blowing through. You can find self-adhesive window sealants which will block out any drafts and invest in some heavy curtains. The heavier the curtain the better. If kept closed they’ll keep the heat in the room, ensuring you stay warm and cosy.
The bed
You should have different bedding to suit different seasons. During the colder months, it’s ideal to invest in sheets and duvet covers that are a bit thicker and heavier to keep you warm. You might even look at changing your duvet itself as the higher the tog rating the warmer the duvet will be. Don’t skimp on throws and blankets either. Faux fur throws are very trendy and give the bed a really plush look and feel. They’re known to keep you very warm and they add a new texture to your room.
Your lights
Make use of incandescent lighting in the bedroom. Remove the white lighting and go warmer. Of course, if you need lighting for your vanity then consider installing a white light overhead specifically for that area. However, throughout the rest of the bedroom, the incandescent lights work best. This type of lighting emits 95 percent of its energy as heat rather than light so by using these bulbs you’ll have a warmed up room in no time.
Your body
Keep a hot water bottle and some body oils nearby so that each night you can prepare your body and your bed for a snug night’s sleep. A hot water bottle is an old school yet extremely effective way of heating up your bed. And certainly safer than using an electric blanket. The best way to ensure you remain warm in your bed even after the water bottle has cooled down, is by treating your skin to some oils. Applying a body oil straight after your shower will help you hold in your body heat and if you use scents such as lavender or chamomile they’ll help you fall asleep.
Baby, it’s cold outside. But it doesn’t have to be cold in your bedroom. You can find a comfortable temperature quite easily and once you’ve warmed up initially you’ll likely sink into a deep, welcoming sleep as the cool air re-enters the room.
