How not to behave at the staff party
The end of the year is coming up, slowly but surely. And with that comes the end of year function. These can be loads of fun and are a great way for you to bond with your colleagues.
You get to do something cool and interesting during working hours and there are always free drinks and food. End of the year functions can turn out to be awesome events.
But sometimes things can go wrong. Very wrong. Since the invention of staff parties, so many people have embarrassed themselves. In some cases, people have received disciplinary hearings or, even worse, been retrenched because of their behaviour.
So, to help you out, here are some tips on how not to behave at your staff party this year.
Don’t go over your booze limit
By the time you’re an adult, you should know your limit. You should know exactly how much alcohol it takes you to get tipsy and how much it takes for you to embarrass yourself. Before you set out for the event, decide on exactly how many drinks you’ll have and what exactly they’ll be. And stick to it. The last thing you want is to end up throwing up on yourself or, even worse, your boss.
Avoid gossip
Once the booze starts flowing and you begin to relax around your colleagues, you may be drawn into conversations you shouldn’t be having. Most people moan about their bosses occasionally. Sometimes you even need to vent about your peers. But a staff party is not the time for this. Why? Because alcohol makes you loud and you may not know who can overhear your complaints. You don’t want awkward death stares when you walk into work the next day.
Try not to be the centre of attention
You may have a reputation for being the life of every party but now is not the time to showcase that talent. Never forget that you are at a work function. It may be all relaxed with drinks flowing but you’re going to see these people at the office every day. So, you may want to stick to the background. This doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Just avoid putting on a show.
Don’t be irresponsible
Don’t drive after one too many. That should go without saying. Rather keep an eye on your consumption. Once again, remember you’re at work. Don’t do anything you wouldn’t want to be known for when the day or night is over. You don’t want to be the person everyone jokes about who got stuck in the security control room. Basically, be responsible.
