Create a très chic vintage vibe at home
Just like your wardrobe changes from summer to winter, so can your home. You don’t need to do a complete overhaul of your home, just a little surface revamp, to give it the facelift it needs for some seasonal style.
With the cold winter months having arrived you’re likely to be inspired to create a cozy and warm environment in your home. Many different interior decor styles can emulate this look and feel. However, one of the most popular home decor styles, that works well with the winter season, is vintage. This interior decor style packs quite a punch by giving your home a vibrant, colourful personality with little nooks of opulence. It incorporates the old with the new which means this style is environmentally aware as well as classy.
Here are a couple of tricks to creating a classy vintage decor style in your home.
Suit up your side tables
Place some old vintage suitcases on top of each other to create side tables or coffee tables in the bedrooms and your lounge. The luggage your grandparents used was predominantly made of wood and leather, both materials age well and will give an authentic vintage look and feel.
Saturday morning market steals
Spend a Saturday morning at second-hand markets to pick up some old movie posters and cookie tins. A framed poster of Casablanca will prove to be a feature piece on your walls as will an old tin of “Ouma Rusks” or a “Quality Street” tin on your shelves. You can find trinkets such as these are flea markets and community boot sales.
Do you even thrift?
Turn to second hand stores and thrift shops stores for old gadgets and electronics. Vintage cameras, typewriters and telephones displayed on bookshelves or used as book stoppers can really cement a room in your yesteryear style. Old style lamps and edison bulbs are extremely popular and easily found, which means that you can create a warm glow in your home. You can refurbish the old material lampshades with a complementary fabric to that of your lounge suites. In this way you can tone down any garish colour clashes.
Keep your potions like an old apothecary
A neat trick in the kitchen and the bathroom is to use old apothecary jars, consol jars and tea cups to store your necessities. These can be used for your toothbrushes, cotton pads and buds, make-up and even small hand soaps while in the kitchen these can house teaspoons, tea bags, spices, cookies and the like. This will help you create your vintage look in these, otherwise fairly modern, parts of your home and they will neaten up your space because all the items remain contained. Place the jars or cups on a silver tray or an old, shallow sewing box and your room will look well organised.
Add layers to feel deliciously warm
With this being an ideal winter decor style, choose a bunch of rugs, throws, blankets and scatter cushions that are textured and can be layered. These items can be a real mix ‘n match. Plush faux fur throws, crochet knits and plaid knee blankets can all be incorporated together into this decor style. Flokati floor rugs and persian prints are also a good match for this style and will create a lovely feature on your floors.
