Scenic Mountain Bike Races Coming Up
Being a keen mountain biker in the Western Cape is not only fantastic exercise but a wonderful way to see the coastal and forested beauty of this province.
There are a number of events in the upcoming weeks where mountain bikers will have the opportunity to not only train but explore new areas.
We look at some of the most scenic mountain bike races taking place soon.
24 Hours of Oak ValleyTaking place in the scenic Oak Valley Estate in the Elgin Valley close to Grabouw, this event is worth competing in just for the scenery alone. There are 10km laps and lap race versions of this event taking place on January 31.
2015 Ashburton Investments National MTB Series #1 MeerendalJust 20 minutes outside of Cape Town in the Durbanville wine route, Meerendal is one of the oldest wine farms in the area. In recent years it has become well known for its excellent network of bike trails. The event takes place on January 31 and is expected to truly see who kept themselves active over the festive season.
99er Cycle Tour and MTB Challenge 2015Taking place on February 7 and the Durbanville Race Course, this event has both road race and mountain bike options. The road race is available in both 108km and 64km options while the mountain bike race is 35km of hilly terrain.
Lighthouse To Lighthouse MTB 2015This 200km two day race takes place on February 7 and 8. The route starts at the Danger Point lighthouse in Gansbaai, about two hours outside of Cape Town, and takes you along gravel roads, trails and fynbos filled fields. It comes to an end at the Agulhas lighthouse, which is located at the southern tip of the African continent.
