Get your feet wet this winter
There’s something delightful about the feeling of sand between one’s toes. It’s a sensation that is all too often forgotten during Cape Town’s winter months. But, the growing chill does bring out a certain charm in the city’s beaches. We’ve identified four beaches around Cape Town that are worth braving the cold for.
Oudekraal
Sandwiched between Bakoven and Llandudno, this picturesque cove lies a mere 15 minutes from the city centre’s best attractions, and is perfect if you are staying at a hotel in Cape Town. The ideal day-trip spot hosts a large grass area with braai facilities, protected parking and ablutions. But the real appeal of Oudekraal is its sheltered waters, where kids are able to frolic freely on a warm winter’s day.
Noordhoek Beach
Noordhoek is 8 kilometres of unspoiled Atlantic Cape Coast. It’s well worth strolling along from Chapman’s Peak to Kommetjie Lighthouse, and for the more adventurous there are also horse riding options available. The beach is very popular with friendly locals, but its vastness means that there’s always plenty of space to find solitude and peace.
Llandudno
May through August offers visitors to Llandudno a beach trip free from screaming kids and misdirected frisbees. Massive boulders on each side of the beach stand as sentinels to those making use of the beautiful white sand. Llandudno is the perfect beach for an afternoon outing or a romantic sunset meander.
Milnerton Beach
Occasionally Cape Town shows off in winter and Milnerton Beach is where you want to be when it does. It boasts some incredible views of Table Mountain and families and couples alike, can always be seen making use of its space with picnics or sports games.
If it takes more than a little romance to convince you that being a beachgoer in the height of winter is a good idea, then the Mother City has a host of other activities that one can indulge in.
