Award-winning local film “Durban Poison” opens at The Labia Cinema
Winner of the Best South African Feature Film at the 37th Durban International Film Festival in 2013, “Durban Poison”, a noir romance from writer/director Andrew Worsdale, starring Brandon Auret, Cara Roberts, Gys de Villers, Marcel van Heerden, Danny Keogh and Frank Opperman is finally going to be seen on local screens after more than six months of acclaim on the international film festival circuit.
The Bioscope in Johannesburg and The Labia in Cape Town, South Africa’s leading independent cinemas, are once again collaborating on a release of a local film that mainstream distributors have chosen to neglect. The film opens on July 11th at both cinemas.
DURBAN POISON is an expose of a relationship between two lovers whose passionate affair self-destructed; they ended up as serial-killers, South Africa’s version of ‘Bonnie and Clyde’, killing four people in a game of sex for money.
Told in flashback the film follows the culprits and the police as they return to the scenes of the crime. Moving between the present and the past, the film is a tale of murder and romance, of truth and lies, of memory and regret so the audience isn’t clear until the climax who is guilty but, meanwhile, have become complicit witnesses of a powerful, combustible romance.
Inspired by a true story, this is a road movie that follows a police investigation into four murders and charts the doomed romance of outlaw lovers.
“DURBAN POISON” features an impressive range of South African acting talent and stars BRANDON AURET (“District 9”, “Elysium”, “To Catch A Fire”, the upcoming “Chappie” with Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver) CARA ROBERTS (in her feature film debut), GYS DE VILLIERS, MARCEL VAN HEERDEN, DANNY KEOGH, DRIKUS VOLSCHENK, RONNIE NYAKALE, MARIE HUMAN, HAMILTON WESSELS and FRANK OPPERMAN as Stoffel.
