Tan Malie se Winkel
In the early stages of the dam building process 1921 – 1923 Tan Malie se Winkel situated very close to the dam wall was the office of Engineers of the early Hartbeespoort Irrigation Works that had to oversee the labourers and construction of the dam. Tan Malie se Winkel, built in the style of a traditional South African trading post, with their vintage yellow bakkie is a landmark in Hartbeespoort, and is probably as well known as the dam itself!
As you step through the door you will find strings of bright coloured sweets, strings, liquorice, home made jams.
They stock home industry products, typical handcrafts, traditional spices, various antiquities, pottery, african curios, arts and crafts and art materials.
You can enjoy a cup of tea and scones or “koffie” and “melktert”, “boerebeskuit”, traditional “bokkoms” (a type of fish salted and dried) in this exquisite country setting.
They feature an abundance of africana like their century old cape cart, an old brandy still from the Cape, and a real Clay oven (bakoond) where they bake boer bread daily.
On Saturdays and Sundays as well as public holidays you can enjoy a braai lunch, with home baked bread, farm butter, pap and gravy and loads of salads.
Getting there: Tant Malie se Winkel is situated between the tunnel at the dam wall and the Damdoryn 4 way stop.
