Full-blown and fabulous – decorate with overscaled florals

This summer overscaled florals are huge in interiors. Here are three stylish ways to incorporate them into your home
As an accent
If you aren’t brave enough to use a large floral motif on curtains or walls, introduce it as a focal point like this headboard upholstered in a gorgeous botanical print – Sanderson’s Grandiflora from St Leger & Viney. “To balance it I had the deep-buttoned blanket box covered in the same fabric,” explains decorator Amanda Walters. “While I wanted to introduce another subtle pattern to the room but not overwhelm the headboard, I chose this trellis design wallpaper – Cordoba by Manuel Canovas from Mavromac – which we edged in Zoffany’s walling braid from St Leger & Viney.” The pale curtains balance the floral design, while a lampshade in Braquenie Leandre from Mavromac adds a pop of colour.
Layer for impact
For her client’s Jo’burg patio, Amanda Walters created an inviting garden room theme.
“The starting point was the Ardmore scatters from Mavromac; the overscaled Hippo Flowers design gives a contemporary twist to a traditional floral.” Amanda combined these with graphic Ardmore Croco scatters, choosing the olive green tones to offset the neutral upholstery. “To emphasise the outdoor connection even more, I love to go over the top with fresh flowers.
Try layering masses of green and white blooms in pretty containers to soften the space.” The curtains are from the Get Out range at Home Fabrics.
Choose graphic botanical prints
If your style is more pared down than girly, consider a bold, graphic floral as a statement piece. This rug from Paco fits the bill with its line drawing effect and muted palette. Pair it with clean-lined furniture, like this sleek Strip sideboard, Cubo chair, artworks and vases, all from Mezzanine Interiors. For a hint of luxe, look for fabrics ‘Oith single overscaled blooms in linen or silk, such as the scatter in Designers Guild Astrakhan fabric, available from Home Fabrics. The bamboo pendant by David Trubridge is from Glo Lighting and the yellow pencil holder (used as vase) is from La Grange Interiors.
