Find out how you can make a difference to hungry SA people
Foodbank SA launches double gift match campaign. You can make a difference!
29 September 2014: Statistics released in August 2013 by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) show that more than half of South Africans do not have regular access to food and only 45.6% of the country’s population has food security.
Andy Du Plessis, Managing Director of FoodBank SA, says that these figures highlight the importance of raising awareness around food security in the country. “More than 11 million South Africans go hungry each day. In an effort to address this growing issue, FoodBank SA will be launching a FoodBank SA Double Gift Match fundraising campaign.”
Currently, it costs FoodBank SA only R1.35 to provide a meal to one hungry person. The Double Gift Match campaign, which launched on the 16th of September and will run up until 28 February 2015, encourages all South Africans to help FoodBank SA to raise a total of R2 million which will be doubled to provide over 2,9 million meals for those who need it most.
“For every R1 that the public donate to the FoodBank SA’s Double Gift Match campaign, an anonymous donor will match this amount to allow FoodBank SA to receive a doubled contribution, making twice the impact,” explains Du Plessis.
“Anyone can make a donation and every donation helps. Visit FoodBank SA’s new website at www.foodbank.org.za. The donation will automatically be doubled during the campaign period. This applies to all new donors and donors who increase their commitment to FoodBank SA,” he adds.
FoodBank SA, a registered non-profit organisation, aims to alleviate hunger in South Africa by collecting and redistributing surplus edible food which was destined for landfill, from manufacturers and retailers. Over 4 million kilograms of food is redistributed annually to various verified NPOs, translating into the provision of 41,500 meals a day.
“No donation is too small for us and every cent counts. We encourage all South Africans to challenge their families, colleagues and friends to get involved in the campaign and to make a difference by donating to the Double Gift Match campaign,” concludes Du Plessis.
