Find the Best Wedding Photographer for You
This is the wedding checklist #2 in our Big Question series.
The biggest single keepsake of your wedding will be the photos that you had taken. These will be your most vivid memories, and you can carry them with you for life. It’s quite crucial, then, to try to find the right photographer for you. When setting up the meeting with a potential photographer, ask him/her for an example of some of their past work.
Carefully examine this portfolio to see how well these photos are framed, how effective the lighting is, and how visible all the details are.
Try to get an idea of how patient and cordial he/she is, as this will be important on the wedding day, when they will need to perform in tune with the itinerary. Don’t forget to check out their references.
- How many weddings have you photographed at? How many of these were similar in size to ours?
- What is your style of photography? Relaxed, artistic, candid, creative, formal, classic, other.
- Can you supply us with references?
- Will ours be the only wedding you are photographing on the selected day?
- How do you charge – by the number of photos, the hours, the developing time, etc?
- Can you show us a sample contract and a breakdown of the costs? [Does this include overtime charges, assistant charges and negatives?]
- What is your cancellation policy?
- Are you the photographer who will be actually taking our pictures at the wedding? If not, can we meet the other photographer/assistant who will be?
- Will you be bringing backup equipment of the same type and quality?
- How long after our wedding will the photos be ready?
- Are you open to a list of photos that we would like to be taken?
- Do you shoot in a digital format that will support versions of the original picture in black and white or colour?
- What will happen if you are ill on the day or if you are delayed?
- What will you be wearing to our wedding?
- Do you carry liability insurance?
