ShowMe South Africa Interviews ‘The Sweet Resistance’.
The Sweet Resistance, one of the hottest acts to come out of Cape Town has been selected as the opening support act for Rock on the Lawns featuring the Pixies.
The Sweet Resistance is an alternative pop rock band out of Cape Town, South Africa. Their songs are rhythmic, melodic anthems plumbing the depths of life, love and opportunity.
Here is an exclusive interview with the band about it’s sound and future ventures.
Who are the band members?
Tash (Natasha Meister): Vocals & Guitars; Mike Vaughan: Bass, keys and Vocals; Gray Lowndes: Guitars; Nick Ornellas: Drums.
What does your band name mean?
We know what it means to us, but we have found that it can mean a few things to others. We like to leave that interpretation open to the listeners. The album depicts the meaning as follows: We know who we are and we know whats right, we’re standing our ground, we’re shining our light. Where there is a will, we know there’s a way, cos there is hope and peace in every day.
When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?
The band was officially formed after we recorded our debut album. Till then it was a handful of like minded muso’s, producers and engineers working collectively to write and produce inspiring songs. So I guess September 2016. The inspiration was nothing but an overwhelming desire to make music between us, that was in us and for us.
Brief history of your band and accomplishments?
- Debut Album Launched in September 2016.
- National playlisting of 1st single FEEL in October 2016.
- Number 1 Single for FEEL in the 5FM Indie Charts.
- Number 8 on the 5FM Top 30 Charts.
- FEEL finished 2016 at number 1 on the 5FM Indie Chart.
- World wide Itunes banners for Itunes Landing Page, POP & Alternative Genres.
Along with numerous shows, TSR supported Goodluck with their Get Lucky Summer Tour in December 2016. 2017 is off to a flyer for us as a band with many cool shows on the way.
How would you describe your genre? Who are your biggest influences?
Alternative / Pop / Rock. We happened to be massive listeners of music, across all genres. We love bands like Paramore, Collective Soul, 21 Pilots, Foo Fighters, Radio Head and Imagine Dragons. We could really go on forever here.
Do you write out your lyrics? What’s your songwriting process?
Yes. It’s a secret.
Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Do you have a set play list?
We play the entire album. Yes, we play cover versions and we like to mix it all up. Its good to be able to feel the mood, the venue, the environment and for a new act its always fun to throw something out there that listeners can recognise and respond too.
Do you have a record label? Are you a member of any music organizations?
Yes, Mixoscape Records. Yes, we are members of Samro and Risa.
Anything you would like share – upcoming shows/tours or songs/albums?
Yeah, check out our facebook page, Instagram and twitter account to keep up to date. Our new single “Captivated” will be dropping this month, listen out for it. And YES, we’re opening on the PIXIES Tour.
How does it feel to be a support act for the Pixies? How did it come about?
We are stoked, it’s a great opportunity and its going to be a monster day for all the SA bands on the bill. We got the call shortly after the album and first single dropped…next thing our name was on the poster!
Do you have any last words?
